Domestic Abuse help for people over 55 years old

Evergreen Project | Domestic Abuse help for people over 55 years old

Evergreen provides specialist support for people aged 55+ who are experiencing domestic abuse, including:

  • Abuse from a partner, ex-partner or family member
  • Coercive control, emotional or psychological abuse
  • Economic abuse
  • Neglect or harm linked to care and dependency

You do not need to be in crisis or have reported to the police to access support.

We recognise that abuse in later life can look different — and can be harder to identify, disclose or leave. It is often shaped by long-term relationships, health needs, dependency, isolation and financial concerns.

Our approach is understanding and tailored to each individual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes.

Many people want to remain in their own home and there may be legal options available to help increase your safety.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to apply for an Occupation Order through the civil court. This can decide who is allowed to live in the property and may prevent another person from returning to the home or entering the surrounding area.

At Evergreen, we can help you understand your options and support you to access legal advice and other services where appropriate.

Being pressured or controlled around money is a form of financial abuse.

This may include someone demanding money, controlling your finances, taking your pension or making you feel frightened or guilty about saying no.

Financial abuse is taken seriously and can be reported to the police if you choose to do so.

We can support you to:

  • Understand your options
  • Access legal or financial advice
  • Speak to relevant services on your behalf
  • Explore ways to increase your safety and independence

We understand these situations can be emotionally difficult, especially when family members are involved.

You have the right to feel safe in your own home.

If you no longer want your partner to return, it is important that professionals involved in their discharge planning are made aware as early as possible.

Evergreen can support you to speak with hospitals, housing providers and other professionals about your concerns and help create a plan that prioritises your safety and wellbeing.

You do not have to manage these conversations alone.

Yes.

If you are considering moving, we can help you explore your housing options and connect you with the right services.

If you are a tenant with Bolton Council or a Housing Association, your housing provider may be able to discuss transfer or rehousing options with you.

You can also contact Housing Options for advice and support.

We understand that housing decisions can feel overwhelming and we can support you throughout the process.

If you need to leave your home because of domestic abuse, support is available.

Abuse can include controlling care, medication, mobility, finances or access to support.

We understand that people may feel trapped in relationships because they rely on someone for care or practical support.

Evergreen can help you access:

  • Adult social care support
  • Home care assessments
  • Advice around benefits and finances
  • Safety planning
  • Community support and befriending services
  • Advocacy with health and care professionals

Your safety, dignity and independence matter.

Yes.

You do not have to leave a relationship to receive support from Evergreen.

We understand that leaving is not always possible, wanted or safe at that time.

We can still work with you to:

  • Increase your safety
  • Create a safety plan
  • Arrange safe ways to meet or contact you
  • Help you understand your options
  • Provide emotional and practical support

We will work at your pace and respect your decisions.
